School Bus Crashes and Injuries
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), students are about 70 times more likely to get to school safely when taking a bus instead of traveling by car. That is the good news. The bad news is school bus-related crashes killed 109 people nationwide in 2019, according to the National Safety Council (NSC), which tabulated data provided by tabulations of data from the NHTSA. In California, and according to the California Department of Education, the California school transportation system, which is the largest mass transportation operation in the state, the system transports about 1,121,857 students to and from school each day.
